CNC Machine Operator
Summary Statement:
Applies basic and some advanced technical skills and knowledge to set up and operate numerical control machine to cut, shape, or form metallic and nonmetallic work pieces to specifications.
Essential Functions and Key Responsibilities:
- Performs tasks that are simple to moderately complex requiring some skill, experience and judgment to complete. Works under close to general supervision and determines plans and actions from standard procedural alternatives.
- Reviews setup sheets and specifications to determine setup procedure, machining sequence, and dimensions of finished work piece. Attaches fixture to machine bed and positions and secures work piece in fixture according to setup instructions.
- Assembles cutting tools in tool holders and positions tool holders in machine spindles as specified or inserts cutting tools in specified machine magazines.
- Enters commands to retrieve pre-programmed machine instructions from database and machine control console.
- Manipulates controls and enters commands to index cutting tool to specified set point and start machine. Observes and listens to machine operation to detect malfunctions such as worn or damaged cutting tools.
- Changes cutting tools and location of work piece during machining process as specified in setup instructions. Measures work piece for conformance to specifications.
- Adjusts machine feed and speed, changes cutters to machine parts according to specifications when automatic programming is faulty or machine malfunctions.
Ancillary Functions and Responsibilities:
Performs other duties as required. These duties may include assignments in job classifications other than the primary assignment.
Job Qualifications:
Formal Education, Training and Work Experience:
Experience may be substituted for the formal education and training requirements in this section at the discretion of management. High School diploma or G.E.D. and formal technical training in operating computer numerically controlled production machines and two (2) or more years of experience.
Level of Supervision Required:
The level of supervision required described here is representative of that which must be met by an Employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Works with regular supervision. Follows standard written or oral instructions. May need additional assistance for more complex tasks.
Special Skills, Licenses or Job Requirements:
Demonstrate competency in applying the following to perform normal job duties:
- Must be able to read and interpret planning and work instructions, blueprints and assembly and fabrication orders.
- Must be familiar with and have operational knowledge of computer driven machine controls.
- Basic understanding of computers, preferably with CNC machine interface and operating software such as AutoCAD and Master Cam.

- While performing the duties of this job the Employee is regularly required to sit, talk and hear, use hands to finger, handle and feel. The Employee frequently is required to walk, and reach with hands and arms.
- The Employee is occasionally required to stand, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
- The Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus.
- Must be able to tolerate exposure to dust, fumes, noise, temperature and other elements in the shop area.
- Must be able to work in excess of five (5) days per week and eight (8) hours per day, as required.
- Must be able to ascend and descend stairs.
